Getting a good shop can be extremely difficult. There are plenty of mechanics to select from and to an average joe who knows little by what to look for, this search for a good mechanic can be quite a dangerous proposition. So now are the questions to ask yourself before deciding:

1 - Locate a mechanic or auto repair shop that has a good reputation.

One of the best ways to find a very good auto mechanic shop is to check around. Ask friends and family which car inspection or mechanic they will use. Some auto repair shops throw big bucks at advertising and promotion, but reputation can not be bought, and that's why reputation is indeed important.

2 - Prescreen an automobile repair shop or auto mechanic.

The easiest method to prescreen you prospective long-term mechanic or auto mechanic shop is to take your car looking for general maintenance including oil changes, transmission fluid changes and basic general preventive maintenance work. If the mechanics treat you based and the general vibe is good then which is a great start. Also look for things like the cleanliness from the shop, observe to see if there are certifications and award plaques on the wall. If everything appears legitimate, maybe this is the place best places to get major repairs done.

3 - The main difference between a national chain auto repair, an independently owned auto repair along with a backyard mechanic.

There are lots of forms of auto repair in everyone's area. The very first type of auto repair shop that I'll describe is national chain shops. The advantage of national chains is you can be sure that their mechanics are A.S.E. Certified. And in addition, national chain shops such as Goodyear, Tuffy and all the rest usually have great warranties. You will find anywhere from 30 days to 90 days on parts and/or labor. The downside is that national chains cost more in most cases than what a privately owned auto repair center charges.

Privately owned shops are less costly and often times provide the same quality of service as the big national chains do. Just be sure to check that the store has A.S.E. certified mechanics, most do.

Backyard mechanics are risky to do business with because they usually do not have the proper diagnostic equipment to identify what the mechanical problem is or appropriate tools to complete the work needed. And lose focus on about A.S.E. certification! Alternatively, everybody needs to start somewhere. Personally I've had friends and thus called backyard mechanics do give you results for me and not really any problems. A great backyard mechanic knows and definately will tell you his limitations. For example installing a starter or an alternator might be a 15 minute job. However, replacing a transmission is a fairly big deal. A very important thing to do is to take your vehicle into an automobile shop with all the appropriate diagnostic tolls in order that you know what has to fixed. When you know what it is that's broken, you know what needs to be fixed. From that point you can decide if a backyard mechanic will be the right choice for you.
